Training Product Recommendation – Treat and Train

The Treat & Train: A Game-Changer for Teaching Calm, Stay-in-Place Behaviors

If you’ve ever struggled to teach your dog stay — especially when distractions are high — the Treat & Train can be a valuable tool for creating consistency and reinforcing the behaviors you’re building.

What Is the Treat & Train?

The Treat & Train is a remote-operated treat dispenser designed to make positive reinforcement training easier and more effective. The system includes a handheld remote (battery included) and a base unit that dispenses treats on command (base unit batteries not included). Setup is simple: load up the base with your dog’s favorite rewards, grab the remote, and you’re ready to go.

Why Distance Matters in Training

One of the biggest challenges when teaching stay-in-place behavior is that the trainer’s presence can actually work against you. Standing right next to your dog can add pressure, and it’s easy to unintentionally give physical or verbal cues that your dog relies on — cues that won’t always be there in real-world situations.

With the Treat & Train, you can reward your dog from up to 100 feet away. That means your dog learns to hold a calm, reliable position on their own, without depending on you being right beside them. Reinforcement is directly connected to the desired behavior.

Perfect for Building Calm Around Distractions

This tool really shines when you start introducing more challenging scenarios — like the vacuum cleaner, unfamiliar dogs, guests, or anything else your dog finds unsettling. Instead of practicing reactivity, restlessness, or breaking position when distractions arise, dogs begin building a reinforcement history of calm, neutrality, and staying in place. With repetition and consistency, those stable behaviors become more natural, automatic, and reliable over time.

That precise, timely reward is what makes the behavior stick. Your dog learns that staying calm and in “position” is what earns reinforcement — and that understanding builds confidence and reliability over time.

Who Is It For?

The Treat & Train is a great fit for a number of behaviors, including:

  • Dogs learning “place,”  “stay,” or “mat” behaviors
  • Dogs who are reactive or anxious around dogs, people, and novel experiences
  • Pet owners  who want to fade out their physical presence while keeping reinforcement strong
  • Anyone looking to build independent, reliable stay behaviors

The Bottom Line

The Treat & Train is a simple, well-designed tool that takes the guesswork out of distance reinforcement. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for new ways to provide enriching experiences, it offers a clean, positive way to communicate with your dog without the tendency to overuse physical or verbal guidance, giving your dog more opportunity to process, integrate, and truly learn the material independently.

Hey, Joanna from the connected K9 and today we are going to talk about one of my favorite tools for stay in place behaviors. Today we’re using the treat and train. Treat and train is really easy to use. There is a remote and it comes with a battery and then the base which you’ll need to get batteries for.

One of the best parts of this system is that you can use positive reinforcement from a distance of up to about 100 ft so you’re not adding additional pressure by being right next to the dog or giving additional verbal or physical cues. And this is really helpful for teaching calm stay in place behaviors. It becomes especially useful when introducing more challenging distractions like the vacuum cleaner or anything the dog might be unsure about. And it’s a simple way to build calm, reliable behavior that makes sense to the dog.

So if you want to incorporate this into your training, you can find it linked right here on this page.
